Which reward should I pick? Help me.

Let’s make this easy. First, know that you can change your reward at any time (up until the project ends on Dec. 17). So don’t stress too much.

Secondly, after you pick your reward you’ll see another screen where you can add-on as many accessories as you want. We’re just helping you pick the starting point. So here we go:

  1. Are you really stoked about these products? Do you like getting the best deal? Go all in. Get $332 reward: The Whole Shebang.

  2. Do you own (or are you getting) one of these phone models? iPhone 12 Pro Max iPhone 12 Pro iPhone 12 iPhone 12 Mini iPhone 11 iPhone 11 Pro iPhone 11 Pro Max Samsung S20 Samsung S20 Ultra Samsung S20+

Get the $32 reward: Pick Your Kit (with Everyday Case).

  1. Are you getting an iPhone 12, but you’re NOT interested in our hard-locking mounts (I.E. bike mounts, motorcycle mounts, Creator Kit)? Get the $1 reward: Pick Your Kit (no Case/Adapter)

  2. Do you not own one of the phones above, and you’re not planning on getting one in the next 6 months? Get the $16 reward: Pick Your Kit (with Universal Adapter)

Will Peak Design make a case for my phone model in the future?

Upon launch, we’re supporting these phone models:

iPhone 12 Pro Max iPhone 12 Pro iPhone 12 iPhone 12 Mini iPhone 11 iPhone 11 Pro iPhone 11 Pro Max Samsung S20 Samsung S20 Ultra Samsung S20+

In the months and years that follow this Kickstarter campaign, we plan to support a growing range of the most popular phone models (iPhone and Android) in the world. If you don’t think you’ll have one of the above phones in the next 6 months, don’t fret: we make a beautiful Universal Adapater for almost any phone.

Will the magnets in your products mess with my phone?

In short, no. Your phone, and the stuff in it, will be fine and work fine.

The longer answer is that we are designing our system such that the magnets will have no adverse impact on your phone’s GPS/navigation, accelerometer, near-field communication (NFC), Bluetooth, wifi, internal compass, or any other technical doodad inside of it. This is our intended result, and we are carefully dialing in magnet spacing, strength, and shielding to make this happen. We have not completed testing on it though, so we cannot promise this across every phone or use case.

Will the magnets in your wallet mess with credit cards and things in my wallet?

In short, no, it shouldn’t. We’re in the midst of extensive testing to ensure your cards will be fine. We may not be able to prevent de-magnetization of older or lower-strength hotel key cards. So you’ll just have to stay at nicer hotels from now on.

Will Mobile by Peak Design be MagSafe-compatible?

In short, yes, we plan to support a range of compatibility use cases between PD products and MagSafe products. Following Apple’s announcement, we are actively doing design updates and testing to meet this goal. We’re excited to share our progress with backers as our campaign progresses. And now, for the longer answer:

For the uninitiated, MagSafe is a magnetic connection system that the new iPhone 12 will use to attach to cases, chargers, and accessories—those made by Apple, and also those made by 3rd parties.

Apple’s launch of MagSafe is an incredibly fortunate event for Peak Design. We’ve spent 4 years developing an ecosystem of products that better connect your phone to your life, and we now have the opportunity to integrate it with a standard that we hope exists for years to come.

It’s always been Peak Design’s plan to support all iPhone 12 models with our Mobile products, and that’s still happening. In addition, Peak Design will now also support cross-compatibility between our mounting ecosystem and the MagSafe mounting system. It is our goal to meet all of the following compatibility scenarios:

  • Peak Design soft-locking mounts and accessories (Tripod, Wallet, Charging Stand, Wall Mount, and Car Mounts) will work with Apple MagSafe phones and cases.

  • You can charge your iPhone 12 in a PD case on an Apple MagSafe charger.

  • Other Apple MagSafe accessories (like their wallet) will attach to a PD case.

A note on charging: When using a Peak Design charger or 3rd party Qi charger, Apple limits charging to 7.5 watts. This may result in a slower charge, but we don’t expect the difference to be impactful for most charging use cases.

Apple announced its new MagSafe connection system 1 week before we launched this campaign. At the time of the campaign launch, we don’t have iPhone 12 or Apple accessories in-hand, and Apple has not published a full set of technical specs for MagSafe. So of course, this is a work in progress. We’re actively making design updates to our products based on the information we have. As we get more info, we’ll know more about the specifics of what the Peak Design + Apple MagSafe user experience will look like. But as of now, we’re very optimistic.

A perk of backing a Peak Design Kickstarter project is getting a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the product development process. If you’re fired up about Mobile by Peak Design, become a backer and come along for the ride. We look forward to sharing the detailed results of our design and testing process with our backer community.

What can and can't I attach the Universal Adapter to?

The adhesive-backed Universal Adapter lets you use just about any phone or case with Peak Design mounts and accessories. But there are some things it was not designed to work with. Here’s the scoop:

  1. It won’t adhere properly to most cases with a rubbery texture, particularly silicone cases. It is not recommend for cases that are textured or porous (like leather). Use it with cases (or directly on phones) with a smooth, flat, hard surface. The footprint of the adapter is about 2” x 3”.

  2. It is not intended for use with anything larger than a phone, like iPads and tablets. Could it be possible to use with items like that? Maybe. But we’ve have not been designing or testing for loads of that size.

Note that when you install the adapter on your phone, it’s a semi-permanent installation. The VHB adhesive can be safely removed without damaging surfaces or leaving residue in most (but not all) instances. We’ve come up with an effective system that involves dental floss and blue painter’s tape. We’ll give you instructions in the package

What can and can't I attach the Wall Mount to?

The Wall Mount can be mounted on a wide variety of surfaces, either magnetically or with an ultra-strong 3M VHB adhesive pad.

Metal surfaces include, well, anything a magnet will stick to. We’ve found it especially indispensable in the kitchen, on refrigerators, range hoods, and dishwashers.

When it comes to surfaces you can adhere it to, the possibilities are almost endless: non-textured walls, tile, glass, mirrors, wood, and more. When you use the adhesive, you get a super-strong semi-permanent installation. If your surface is painted drywall, and the paint doesn’t have a strong bond (due to age, layering, improper application, or whatever) you might pull some paint off upon removal. So if you’re in a rental, stick to non-painted surfaces or find where your landlord keeps the touchup paint.

Adhesion to textured or porous surfaces is inconsistent and we wouldn’t recommend it.

What can and can't I attach the Car Mount to?

The Car Mount attaches to your car dash or console via an ultra-strong 3M VHB adhesive pad. Your best results will be on smooth, flat, hard surfaces. Results will be inconsistent on soft, porous surfaces (like leather or soft puffy vinyl). The VHB adhesive can be safely removed without damaging surfaces or leaving residue in most (but not all) instances. We’ve come up with an effective system that involves dental floos and blue painter’s tape. We’ll give you instructions in the package.

Can I re-mount the Universal Adapter / Wall Mount / Car Mount?

The Car Mount will come with an 2nd VHB pad for remounting elsewhere on your dash or on another car.

For the Wall mount and Universal Adapter, we don’t currently plan to offer extra VHB pads in the package, but we do intend to have extra pads available worldwide on our website once we fulfill these products.

How much will the products shown in videos expected to change before shipping/production?

Functionally, not much. Aesthetically, a little bit. The products in our video and pictures are pre-production prototypes. We’re in the latter stages of our product development cycle but we’re still actively making design tweaks to create the most ergonomic, seamless, and aesthetic user experience as possible. We hope to share pictures and video of updated product samples throughout our campaign.

Last updated: October 19, 2020 07:23

What are the sizes, weights, and detailed specs of these products?

We are still finalizing dimensions, but we’ll publish this information once we are closer to the end of our design phase. Right now, the exact dimensions and weights of these products may be tweaked.

We designed these products to be low-profile and beautiful, and we do not intend to disappoint.

How protective/rugged/thin is the Everyday Case?

Good question.

We’ve always found protective cases to be too bulky, and thin cases to not be very protective. We designed the Everyday Case to be the perfect balance of these attributes, making it equally suited for downhill mountain biking or sitting on the couch (or chaise lounge) and Facetiming with a friend.

The Everyday Case is just 2.4mm thick, making it as thin (and sometimes thinner) than many other 3rd party ““slim”” cases. Adding 2.4mm of thickness to your phone ain’t much, even in the tightest of our Marketing Director’s pants pockets. And he lives in Austin, so you know his pants are tight.

At the same time, the Everyday Case is burly. It’s made from lightweight, durable polycarbonate and wrapped in beautiful weatherproof nylon canvas fabric. Along the edges is a full-surround drop-insulating thermoplastic guard. And a small lip extends beyond the front of the screen to prevent scratching when your phone is laid down screen-first

Will the Everyday Case work with my wireless charger?

Yes, the Everyday Case will work with all Peak Design charging devices, and some 3rd party charging devices.

There’s an endless array of 3rd party wireless chargers out there, and we’d never be able to validate compatibility with all of them. Our intention was to design a case that would not prevent charging on 3rd party chargers is as wide a range of scenarios as possible. In general, our testing has shown compatibility with most higher-end wireless chargers.

Note that we do intend to support charging with Apple’s new MagSafe chargers. See additonal FAQ on MagSafe for more detials.

Can I add other Peak Design products onto my reward?

Sure you can. First, become a backer and pick your reward. Then, you don’t need to do anything else until the campaign ends. When the campaign ends (end of December) we’ll send you a survey to collect your shipping information. In that survey you’ll be able to add on any additional Peak Design items you want (anything found at peakdesign.com [excluding some of the replacement parts]) and pay us the extra amount right then and there.

Note that we’ll give a special Kickstarter discount for all add-on items. That discount is TBD, but will likely be about $5 to $10 off each product.

You exceeded your funding goal! Where does all the extra money go?

This is a question that we get asked frequently, as we’ve exceeded our funding goal in all of our 9 Kickstarter campaigns to date. The short answer is that most goes to inventory and the rest goes into future product development, marketing, and other business related stuff.

Peak Design is a 100% crowdfunded company. That means that we’ve never taken outside investment from equity investors. Instead, we’ve been fortunate enough to raise the money we need to run and grow our business through Kickstarter campaigns, as well as the direct and wholesale sales we do.

While on paper we are an employee-owned business, we consider our Kickstarter backers to be our unofficial investors and board of directors. When we run a Kickstarter campaign, our hope is to raise the cash we need to mass-produce new products, not just for backers, but for subsequent direct and wholesale orders. We also hope to generate a lot of buzz and awareness (a.k.a. marketing stuffs). In exchange, our backers are the first to receive our new products and they are able to pre-order them at an exclusive discount (often 20-30%). Furthermore, we also take every opportunity to plug backers directly into our product development process via surveys, live hangouts, and general feedback. The result is that our future product development is (in part) funded by backers, and our product roadmap is (in part) written by backers.

In conclusion, we believe crowdfunding gives us the best customers in the world and lets us focus on doing what we love the most: designing really really good stuff. Thank you for being a part of this!

What kind of warranty does Mobile have?

We don’t just have one, we have the best one out there. All Peak Design products, including all Mobile Products, carry a lifetime warranty. That means if any part becomes defective or dysfunctional over time we will repair or replace it free of charge.

What is your refund and exchange policy?

While all of our products are guaranteed for life, we do not offer refunds, returns, or exchanges on items received as Kickstarter rewards.

The support we get from our Kickstarter backers is what enables us to run and grow our business, gather customer feedback, design new products and improve existing ones. In the Kickstarter community, the items that you receive after making a pledge are referred to as “rewards” because they are not purchases in the traditional sense. Think of rewards as gifts—in our case, Travel Tripods—that are sent to our supporters as a token of appreciation for their support of our business. In the same way that public television funds their service through the pledges of their supporters, who in turn receive gifts and continued programming, we have chosen to run and grow our business on a crowdfunded business model.

We appreciate your understanding of our policy and the support you have given us. If your reward truly offers no value to you, here are a few things that you could do in the spirit of crowdfunding…

  1. Give your reward to a friend. Our products might not work for you, but there are many folks out there who might find them very valuable. We’d love for you to share our gear with a friend of yours.

  2. Sell your reward to somebody. Many Kickstarter rewards were purchased below the retail value – if you want to recuperate that value and possibly even more, throw your reward up on eBay.

  3. Give your reward another chance. Some of our products can take some getting used to. All of our gear is designed for use in a variety of scenarios. Maybe it doesn’t work for you right now, but perhaps you’ll find the right time and place in the future.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us at [email protected] if you have any questions.

Shipping: When will these products ship?

With the exception of our charging accessories (Charging Car Mount and Wireless Charging Stand) we expect to ship all products in May, 2021. Charging accessories are planned to fulfill in July, 2021.

We don’t want backers to wait to get products in their hands, and therefore we will split shipments of those who are receiving charging and non-charging accessories.

These shipping dates are estimates, not guarantees. That said, we work tirelessly to ensure that we meet the expectations of our backers when it comes to making the best products and getting it to them in a timely manner. We’ve built our reputation on it, and we’ll stake our reputation on it. Heck, if things go really well, we might be sending some products out earlier than expected.

Shipping: Can I pick up my reward from the PD office, Flagship Store or a local warehouse?

Sorry, we cannot do direct pickups of rewards. Our shipping system is highly automated and designed to get large quantities of stuff to people quickly and accurately, but it is unfortunately not designed to allow for manual pick-up

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
